The elementary grades at Brookstone Christian Academy consist of Kindergarten
through fifth grades. The goal of the elementary school is building a basis
of Biblical Foundations in every subject; developing skills such as reading,
spelling, and mathematics; revealing character that will sustain the students
throughout life.
Students are encouraged toward success through the development of organization
and study skills, accountability for classroom behavior, and mastery of skill
areas. The ability to reason and think reflectively is nurtured, as is the
development of a Biblical Worldview.
BIBLE: The Bible is taught as the inspired Word of God. Students are encouraged
to develop a personal relationship with Christ while internalizing Biblical
principles and qualities. Scripture memory work is done at every grade level.
READING: Using the Direct Instruction approach to teaching reading, teachers
work with students at their ability level to develop the skill area of reading.
Direct Instruction is a rigorously developed, highly scripted method of teaching
reading. It is fast-paced and provides constant interaction between students
and the teacher.
SPELLING: Also considered to be a skill area, our spelling curriculum uses
Direct Instruction as well. Spelling is taught through repetitive drill based
on the rules of orthography. Students are taught at their own ability level.
ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION: English Grammar
and composition are taught using Principle Approach methodology, concentrating
on mastery of the rules of proper grammar and the implementation
of such rules into the practice of writing. Students are taught to become thorough,
thoughtful writers. As students learn to clothe their thoughts with words,
the accurate communication of Biblically reasoned ideas will be the result.
Reflective thinking is encouraged through the writing process.
LITERATURE: Using the Principle Approach methodology,
the classics of literature are taught at each grade level.
Literature is both as an art to be loved and enjoyed,
but also as a tool for communicating ideas. Studying
the classics helps develop a love for the prosody of
literature. It also allows the student to develop critical
thinking skills and provides a model and inspiration
for thinking and writing.
MATHEMATICS: The skill area of mathematics is taught using the Direct
Instruction methodology. However, the study of mathematics is continually
returned to Biblical Principles as its root. Mathematics skills are strengthened
through frequent math drill work. All students are instructed at their ability
level. Great mathematicians throughout history are studied.
HIS-STORY: A Biblical
view of God and His Providential hand in the history of man and government
is introduced. The importance of each individual in God’s
plan is recognized as important events in human history, beginning with creation,
are taught. BCA uses the Noah Plan scope
and sequence to determine what events are examined at different grade levels. |

The middle school at Brookstone Christian Academy consists of sixth through eighth
grades. The goal of the middle school is to build upon the strong Biblical Foundations,
skills and habits developed in the elementary grades. Understanding in every
subject broadens and deepens, preparing the student for high school. There is
a continued emphasis placed on character development and the practice of consistency
in regard to character.
Students are encouraged toward success through the development of organizational
and study skills, accountability for classroom behavior, and mastery of skill
areas. The ability to reason and think reflectively is nurtured, as is the development
of a Biblical Worldview.
BIBLE: Bible class begins every day encouraging the student to develop healthy
spiritual disciplines such as Bible reading, journaling and prayer. Within the
middle school Bible curriculum, students study the life of Jesus Christ, Biblical
Doctrine and Christian Leadership. Logic and character development are also emphasized.
LITERARY ARTS: All aspects of the English Language are taught together at the
middle school level as composition, literature, spelling, and grammar are all
inter-dependant elements of the literary arts. Classical literature, such as
Ivanhoe, David Copperfield, and the plays of Shakespeare are the basis for the
study of literature. Expository and creative writing are emphasized, using Excellence
in Writing as a methodology. Spelling, syntax and handwriting are all taught
in conjunction with these literary elements.
MATHEMATICS: Mathematics is explored as a language God gave us to measure and
interact with His creation. Basic math concepts which prepare students for higher
level courses, including computation, speed, and accuracy, are emphasized. By
eighth grade, students should be prepared to study algebra. Great mathematicians
throughout history are also studied.
HIS-STORY: A Biblical view
of God and His Providential hand in the history of man and government is built
upon. In sixth grade, the focus is ancient history
through the Medieval period. Seventh graders study world history from the Medieval
period to the present. In eighth grade, a study of the Rudiments of America’s
Christian History is the focus. History is explored as the story of God’s
plan of redemption for man. |
